Anyway I've scanned the first elite arid lancer target and now, repeating the mission i'm finding that the target trails visible in the scanner lead to ..., Synthesis scans are one thing - simaris has a tutorial for how to do those. Maybe you need a complete codex entry to unlock a particular enemy as a synthesis target. To get codex entries you need to scan a target multiple times (with any scanner). That means finding them in the wild and just scanning them.
