Strip mining coal

When a resource occurs in shallow horizontal deposits near the surface, the most effective mining method may be strip mining. During strip mining, layers of surface soil and rock are removed from large areas to expose the resource. After heavy machinery removes the soil and rock, the resource is extracted. Then, the soil and rock are replaced.
